Warnings

What type of warnings does the app give?

Our aim is to give warnings for all situations that can be dangerous, including any roadside cameras, which can result in a fine or other penalty, such as licence points.

The types of warnings can be divided into camera warnings and safety warnings.

Camera warning types are as follows:

  • fixed speed camera: a static camera, which is activated based on driven speed
  • red light camera: a static camera, which is activated based on traffic light colour, in some areas combined with speed
  • average speed zone: two or more static cameras, which measure your driven speed over a stretch of road and is activated when the average speed at the last camera is over the limit
  • traffic restriction cameras: a static camera, which is activated for a number of restrictions (no-right-turn cameras, bus-lane cameras, etc.)
  • speed enforcement zone: multiple static cameras, spread over a stretch of road, which are activated based on driven speed (not average speed)
  • mobile speed camera: a temporary camera (laser or radar, handheld or on a tripod), which is activated based on driven speed (confirmed camera)
  • likely mobile camera: a mobile speed camera (not yet confirmed).

Safety warning types are as follows:

  • speeding: a warning when you exceed the legal speed limit
  • jam ahead: a warning when you are approaching a traffic jam moving at a slower speed than the traffic driving towards it
  • danger zones (only when driving in France): a warning for a potentially dangerous stretch of road, including fixed speed cameras
  • risk zones (only when driving in France): a warning for a temporary potentially dangerous stretch of road, including mobile speed camera (confirmed camera)
  • likely risk zones (only when driving in France): a warning for a temporary potentially dangerous stretch of road, including mobile speed cameras (not yet confirmed)

You can switch each warning type on and off in the app, or restrict them to only warn you in certain situations. Go to the Settings menu and then select Warnings, then Camera warnings or Safety warnings to adjust the settings.

Note that if you switch a warning type off, this turns off both visual and audio alerts for this warning type.

How can I change the distance between the warning and the actual camera?

Go to the Settings menu and then select Warnings and Warning time to adjust how long before a camera appears on your route you want to be alerted.

Please note that warning time is also affected by your smartphone’s GPS performance. This means that the warnings may come later than expected if you're for instance driving through a tunnel.

How do I get warned when going over the speed limit?

Go to the Settings menu and then select Warnings, Safety Warnings and then Speeding. Here you can set whether you want an audible or a visual warning, or both.

Sometimes the warnings for a camera are late. Why is that?

The warning distance is calculated using your position, which is provided by GPS. If your GPS position is not accurate, either temporarily (because you are in a tunnel) or regularly (because of the smartphone hardware and/or software), then you may occasionally experience that a warning is given late for a camera.

Driving very fast may also result in a late warning.

Battery and GPS

How much battery power does the app use?

We have attempted to minimize the battery drain in the app. However, it is necessary to use GPS in order to determine whether or not you're approaching a camera. Your smartphone's display also uses a lot of battery power. To minimize the impact, you can dim the screen.

We strongly recommend that you connect your smartphone to the charger at all times when using the app.

How can I minimize the amount of battery power the app uses?

Set the screen to a lower brightness, use the app in Overlay view, or turn the screen off completely and run the app in the background. Also make sure that the app is set to auto-shutdown: go to the Settings menu, then select Start/stop and Close app when idle.

Why does the app sometimes lose the GPS connection?

GPS performance depends on many factors such as the amount of buildings around you, weather, etc. It also depends very much on the GPS hardware and software in your smartphone.

Speed limits and current speed

How can I get warned whenever I go over the speed limit?

Go to the Settings menu and then select Warnings, Safety Warnings and Speeding. Here you can set whether you want an audible or visual warning, or a combination of both.

Why does the app show a lower current speed than the speedometer in my vehicle?

Vehicle speeds are usually set to be a few miles (or kilometers) per hour higher than your actual speed, and the app speed is correct more often. This does also depend on the quality of the GPS receiver in your phone - so if in doubt, slow down.

Why are some speed limits incorrect or take a long time to change?

We are working on a better way of showing you the current legal speed limit, which will hopefully improve this experience.

Bluetooth®

Which Bluetooth® systems are supported?

Most smartphones support Bluetooth®, which will allow you to send the audible warnings emitted by your phone to an external audio system, whether it is a Bluetooth® headset, a Bluetooth®-enabled car kit, or a Bluetooth® system built into your vehicle. This app supports most Bluetooth® sound systems.

If you hear your phone’s ringtone and other alert sounds over your Bluetooth® sound system, the audio alerts that the app emits will also work through this system.

If your sound system only plays music and doesn’t play your ringtone, go to the Settings menu and then select Sounds and Sound Output and set it to Device selected output.

Setting the app to automatically connect to the Bluetooth® system when in range

  • Go to the Settings menu and then select Start/stop and Automatic start up.
  • Make sure you have Bluetooth® turned on or turn it on by going to Bluetooth® settings.
  • Make sure you are paired to the Bluetooth® device you want to automatically start up with when the connection has been established, or connect to a Bluetooth® device by going to the Bluetooth® settings.
  • Search for the device that you want to start up with and select it from the list. From now on the app will automatically start when connecting to that Bluetooth® device and stop when you disconnect.

I have connected my phone to my vehicle's Bluetooth® system, but the sound doesn’t play through the car’s speakers.

Some built-in Bluetooth® systems only support music, some only support telephony sound, and some support both. By default, our app assumes your sound system supports telephony sound and plays warnings through the telephony sound channel.

You can make the app use the media sound channel by going to the Settings menu, then selecting Sounds and Sound Output, and setting it to Device selected output.

Why does my Bluetooth® auto-start no longer work?

If you have stopped the Speed Cameras app in a non-standard way, for example through force stop, this may interfere with the auto-start functionality. Please open the app manually once and then close it, and the feature will work again.

Map

Can the map rotate to follow my driving direction?

No, we currently use a standard map view where north is always at the top of the screen.

Can I change what is visible on the map?

Yes, you can turn off each type of content in the menu options, removing the content from the map.

Go to the Settings menu and then select Warnings, Camera warnings and Safety Warnings and Traffic Information.

Data connectivity

Can I use the app without a cellular data connection?

No. The app has been designed to make sure you always have the latest information, and therefore the app needs a data connection. Please be aware that roaming charges may apply if you use the app abroad.

How much data does the app use?

That depends on how you use it, we are constantly striving to find the best balance between the data used and an excellent user experience.

For lower data usage we recommend that you use the Road or Overlay view, with Traffic information turned off. Go to the Settings menu and then select Traffic information, then Jam information while driving. If you use the Map view, zooming out will use less data.

Using Road View or Overlay View

If you commute for one hour per day, we estimate that the app will use approximately 30 MB of data per month. We base this estimate on the following:

  • You drive 30 minutes each way.
  • Your Android device has a screen resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels (~445 ppi pixel density).
  • You do not have traffic information turned on.

Using Map View

If you commute for one hour per day, we estimate that the app will use approximately 45 MB of data per month. We base this estimate on the following:

  • You drive 30 minutes each way.
  • Your Android device has a screen resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels (~445 ppi pixel density).
  • You do not zoom in excessively. Note that zooming in will consume more data while driving.
  • You do not scroll excessively around the map while driving.
  • You do not have traffic information turned on.

Important: If you are outside of the area covered by your mobile data plan, you may be liable for extra roaming charges while using TomTom Services. Check with your mobile operator for details.

Reporting, confirming, and deleting cameras

How do I report a missing fixed or mobile camera?

Please report all cameras we've missed by pressing the Report button as close to the actual location as you can get. Your fellow community members will appreciate it.

I have reported a fixed camera, but the next time I drove past it, the app didn't warn me. Why not?

For fixed cameras our expert moderation team investigates all reports individually. Sometimes, due to the high number of reports, it may take up to a week to confirm that your report is a real speed camera, which is active. Please bear with us. Ultimately these manual checks make the warning service of higher quality than a purely community based approach.

Why does the app ask me to confirm that cameras are still there?

We ask the community to help us to verify the location of all speed cameras, so any new or removed cameras can be processed quickly in our database. In some countries, we only ask for a confirmation the first time you drive past a camera, in other countries we will ask the question each time until you answer it. You are not obliged to respond to the question, but the service gets better if you do.

Sound and Spoken Warnings settings

I do not hear any warnings

First, check the volume by going into the app, then the Settings menu and turn the volume on your phone up. You will see the volume increasing on the volume bar and hear confirmation.

If you are using Bluetooth®, please try changing the sound output channel by going to the Settings menu, select Sounds and Sound Output, then select Always use device speaker.

How can I adjust the warning volume?

This can be set using the phone up/down volume button while in the app, or at the bottom of the Settings menu using the slider, which also allows you to test the volume.

The sound files we use have been specifically made to allow the most flexibility for most people’s requirements when driving. We use the standard Android Device Media volume setting.

How can I use spoken warnings instead of beeps?

Go to the Settings menu and then select Sounds and Sound Type. Here you can choose between Read aloud warnings, Warning sounds and None.

If the option Read aloud warnings is not available, this is because your device is not enabled for text-to-speech. In some devices, depending on your Android version and phone language, text-to-speech (TTS) comes pre-installed, in others you will need to enable it and download the speech data for the selected language(s). Please see your device manual for details on how to do this.

How can I force the sounds to be played through the device speaker even when I have the app connected to a Bluetooth® unit?

This depends on the particular brand and model of your phone. By default, warning sounds are played through the same channel as your phone’s ringtone. On most devices, this uses both the phone’s speaker and the connected audio system, but some phones play ringtones only through the audio system.

If you want the app to play all sounds through the audio system, go to the Settings menu and then select Sounds, Sound Output, and set it to Device selected output.

Legality

Is it unlawful to use this app in my country?

As a driver it is your responsibility to make sure that you adhere to all legal requirements while driving, so that includes the use of apps. You can turn speed camera alerts on or off at any time and the app will still work for traffic information. The legality of the Speed Cameras service in several EU countries is unclear. You use the service at your own risk and TomTom accepts no liability arising from its use.

As a driver you should be aware of the fact that speed cameras are disabled in certain countries and take this into account when crossing any borders.

In France, we support Danger Zones and Risk Zones instead of speed cameras. See the Warning Types section for more information. The app is certified by Infocert that it is legal to use in France.
