How do I get a GPS fix on my GPS Sport Watch?

Click here to see which products/categories this applies to.

The following activities require a GPS fix:

  • Run
  • Cycle
  • Freestyle
  • Golf
  • Trail
  • Hike
  • Ski
  • Snowboard

Note: Not all activities are available on all watches.

When you select one of the above activities, your watch uses its internal GPS receiver to measure your speed, and to record the route you have taken. On the Golfer watch GPS is used to estimate your distance to the green.

There are several things you can do to make sure you get a GPS fix quickly:

QuickGPSfix helps your watch find your precise location quickly so you can start your activity. To update the QuickGPS information on your watch, connect your watch to your computer. TomTom Sports Connect automatically updates the QuickGPS information on your watch. QuickGPSfix information is valid for three days after you download it.

If you have a compatible phone, you can also use the TomTom Sports mobile app to  update the QuickGPS information. See also: Is the TomTom Sports app compatible with my mobile device ?

Your watch shows the status of QuickGPSfix. Depending on your watch, do one of the following:

  • From the clock screen, move down and then select ABOUT.
  • From the clock screen, move left to open the status screen.
QuickGPSfix on your watch is up-to-date.

QuickGPSfix on your watch is out-of-date. If the QuickGPSfix infor-mation on your watch is out-of-date, your watch still works as usual. It may, however, take longer to get a GPS fix when you want to start an activity

Clear view of the sky

The GPS receiver is positioned under the button on your watch. While you train, the GPS receiver needs to face upwards. Your watch must be used outdoors, ideally in an open area without tall buildings or trees too close to where you are.

While your watch is waiting for a GPS fix you see the message Please wait and a blinking satellite in the Run or Cycle activity start screen.  When it's ready to start an activity, your watch shows the message, GET GOING or GO.

Avoid moving

If you already start running or cycling while your watch is waiting for a GPS fix, it takes longer to get a GPS fix.
