HOME Error: HomeBase/IO

To view the full error message displayed in TomTom HOME, click Details.

The two most common error messages for HomeBase/IO are:

  • "Error writing file"
  • "Error during scanning for navigation items"
  • "Internal/Malformed"

To fix any HomeBase/IO errors, you need to backup and restore your navigation device.

For instructions, select your operating system from the list below:

  • Windows 8
  • Windows 7/Vista
  • Windows XP
  • Mac OS X

Back up your device

Important: You need this backup to restore your device!

  1. In TomTom HOME, click Manage my device.

  2. Click Items on device.

  3. Select Maps.

  4. Click Copy items to computer.
    TomTom HOME copies your maps to your computer.

  5. Close TomTom HOME.

Format the internal memory or memory card

  1. On the start screen, type Computer and click on My Computer.
    If you are using Windows 8.1 click This PC.

  2. Right-click your navigation device and click Format.

  3. Make sure FAT is selected under File system.

  4. Make sure Quick Format is not selected.

  5. Click Start. A warning is shown.

  6. Click OK.
    Windows formats your device.

Remove old files from your computer

  1. In TomTom HOME, click Manage my device.

  2. Click Items on computer.

  3. Select Applications and Voices.

  4. Click Remove items from computer.

Install the application on your navigation device

  1. In TomTom HOME, click Update my device.

  2. Select the application and at least one voice.

  3. Click Update and install.

  4. Click Done.

Restore the map to your navigation device

  1. In TomTom HOME, click Add Traffic, Voices, Speed Cameras etc.

  2. Click Items on my computer.

  3. Click Maps and then click Add.

  4. Click Postcodes and then click Add.

Back up your device

Important: You need this backup to restore your device!

  1. In TomTom HOME, click Manage my device.

  2. Click Items on device.

  3. Select Maps.

  4. Click Copy items to computer.
    TomTom HOME copies your maps to your computer.

  5. Close TomTom HOME.

  2. Then right-click your navigation device and click Format.

  3. Make sure FAT32 is selected under File system.

  4. Make sure Quick Format is not selected.

  2. Click Items on computer.

  3. Select Applications and Voices.

  1. In TomTom HOME, click Update my device.

  4. Click Done.

  1. In TomTom HOME, click Add Traffic, Voices, Speed Cameras etc.

  2. Click Items on my computer.

  3. Click Maps and then click Add.

  4. Click Postcodes and then click Add.

  1. From the Finder menu, click Go then click Utilities. Then double-click Disk Utility.

  2. Disk Utility lists the available disks and their volumes. Select the volume under your navigation device.

  4. Click Erase and then select MS-DOS (FAT) from the Volume Format drop-down menu.

  5. Click Erase. A warning is shown.

  6. Click Erase. Disk Utility formats your device.

Remove old files from your computer

  1. In TomTom HOME, click Manage my device.

  2. Click Items on computer.

  3. Select Applications and Voices.

  4. Click Remove items from computer.

Install the application on your navigation device

  1. In TomTom HOME, click Update my device.

  2. Select the application and at least one voice.

  3. Click Update and install.

  4. Click Done.
