Checking your navigation device for memory errors

This page applies to navigation devices that are updated using TomTom HOME. What software do I need to update my device?

If you are experiencing problems with your device, you can check your TomTom's internal memory and/or memory card for errors.

Click on your operating system:

  • Windows 8/10
  • Windows 7 & Vista
  • Windows XP
  • Mac OS X

Windows 8/10

  1. Connect your TomTom device to your computer and turn it on.

  2. Press Windows logo key  +D to show the Windows desktop.

  3. Right-click on the TomTom HOME icon in the system tray and choose exit.

  4. Press Windows logo key  +E to open the Windows Explorer.

  5. Right-click the removable drive for your TomTom device / memory card.

  6. Click Properties and select the Tools tab.

  7. Under Error checking click Check

  8. Click Scan and repair drive.

Windows 7 & Vista

  1. Connect your TomTom device to your computer and turn it on.

  2. Right-click on the TomTom HOME icon in the system tray and choose exit.

  3. Click the Windows Start button → Computer.

  4. Right-click the removable drive for your TomTom device / memory card.

  5. Click Properties.

  6. Select the Tools tab.

  7. Under Error checking click Check Now…

  8. Check both boxes and then click Start.

Windows XP

  1. Connect your TomTom device to your computer and turn it on.

  2. Right-click on the TomTom HOME icon in the system tray and choose exit.

  3. Click the Windows Start button → My Computer.

  4. Right-click the removable drive for your TomTom device / memory card.

  5. Click Properties.

  6. Select the Tools tab.

  7. Under Error checking click Check Now…

  8. Check both boxes and then click Start.

Mac OS X (Apple)

  1. Connect your TomTom device to your computer and turn it on.

  2. Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.

  3. Select your TomTom device / memory card in the left pane and then click Repair Disk.
